Brief Facts

Scope of Construction?

  • Plan approved by Ohio Schools Facility Commission includes
    • Demolition / replacement of 1921 elementary building
    • Renovation of the 1959 elementary wing
    • Renovation of 1976 Middle School building
    • Removal of eight modular units
    • Does not involve any work at the high school
  • Plan is most cost-effective option and required special approval by the State because it mixed both renovation and new build
  • Board-approved plan resulted in saving millions of dollars over original plan

Why Now?

  • For first time, L-B was approved for dollar-for-dollar match of our local funds
  • Match has never been higher in State’s history
  • Our current opportunity expires in December of this year
  • If we don’t approve levy on November 4th!
    • No guarantee that L-B will be approved in future years
    • No guarantee that funding will even be available
    • If it is available in the future, it may not be at current matching level
    • We have it now, if only we pass the levy in November

The Need

  • L-B has rich history and much to be proud of
  • We’ve been successful both inside and outside the classrooms
  • We have great teachers and great students
  • But, we must also have good facilities to ensure success
  • In the early 1990’s, residents responded to need for our new high school.  Prior and current students and many future generations have and will benefit from the great LBHS facility
  • The existing 1921 elementary and 1959 building wing facilities have served the community well for much of the last ~50 to 90 years.  But, these outdated facilities no longer meet the needs of our students, nor do they provide a safe and thriving environment for learning.
  • To put it in perspective, the elementary building was constructed between World War I and the Depression.  That’s before some of our great-grandparents were even born.
  • More recently, we have housed many students in modular units most of the last decade.  These modules were designed for short-term use only.
  • Existing Elementary and Middle School buildings do not meet the State’s minimum standards nor are they energy efficient
  • We’ve all heard the stories of sweating in one classroom in the middle of the winter while students across the hall were wearing coats to stay warm
  • Our students deserve better and this is our opportunity to invest in our future

Doing Nothing is Not a Long-term Option

  • Nobody likes higher taxes, and we understand that
  • But if you accept the fact that doing nothing is not a long-term option, then you must ask yourself, “Will it cost me less in the future to solve this imminent problem?”
  • The answer is clearly “NO!” for two main reasons
    • Costs of construction are continuing to rise and the price tag will increase by additional millions with each passing year
    • State’s dollar-for-dollar match has never been higher and likely never will given Ohio’s continuing budget struggles
  • It’s a known fact - the most important factors families look for when relocating or deciding where to buy a home is school system, school system, school system!
  • Unlike most taxes, a school levy is an investment in maintaining property value and enhancing the community
  • Our belief is a positive impact on property values will far out weigh the cost of an incremental levy

We need your support of this levy to continue the long-term success at L-B
